Canard-Duchene was founded in 1868 following the marriage of barrel maker Victor Canard and wine grower Leonie Duchene in the small village of Ludes just outside Reims. They had a son Edward who took over in 1890. He was young, bold and loved Champagne. With his business acumen he took the Canard-Duchene brand global and it became one of the Champagnes supplied to Tsar Nicholas II. Their label still bears the Russian Imperial Family emblem, the two headed eagle together with the sabre symbolising the tradition of sabrage – the stylish art of opening of a bottle with a sword.
Currently managed by Jean-Louis Malard, Canard-Duchene is long established as one of the main Champagne houses with a bottle of Canard-Duchene being popped in France every 10 seconds. Owned by LVMH from 1978 to 2003 it is now part of the Alain Thienot Group, owner of Champagne Thienot, Joseph Perrier and Marie Stuart.
